Currants are an unpretentious plant and do not require more attention than raspberries or gooseberries.
When bushes suddenly stop bearing fruit, gardeners decide that this is how it should be, that it is the year or the plant has decided to “rest.” This is a fundamentally wrong point of view, because the gardener is to blame.
We will tell you what prevents the bush from regularly bearing fruit every year. Some things depend on the variety and the weather. But mostly on care.
Blackcurrant
This crop begins to bear fruit normally only in the fourth year after planting and will grow normally in one place for up to 12 years, it is only important to provide proper care and there will be no problems with the harvest.
Red currant
It begins to bear fruit in the second year, and at full strength only 6 years after planting. It grows quietly in one place for up to 20 years or more, but only with normal care.
Why are there no berries?
1. Regardless of the variety, all currant bushes from 5 years old need to be trimmed. The procedure is carried out for the purpose of rejuvenation. As the bushes age, the harvest will decrease.
2. There will be no berries if the bushes are planted in the wrong place, for example, in the shade, if you choose a variety that is not suitable for the climate, or if you ignore treatments for pests and diseases.
3. And the last thing that can cause harm is irregular feeding or a passion for folk advice, such as replenishing the bush's nutrient diet with potato peelings. This will clearly be too little for normal fruiting.
