Cabbage is considered one of the most common vegetable crops, so it is grown in almost every garden plot.
This is a fairly unpretentious plant that requires good care.
Especially fertilizing and watering, starting immediately after planting cabbage seedlings in open ground.
Soil
Cabbage likes fertile soil, but does not tolerate acidic soil. It should be moist and have good water-air permeability. Therefore, you should not plant cabbage seedlings on heavy and clay soils.
Planting dates
Everything will depend on the climate and weather conditions. Cabbage seedlings are planted in well-warmed soil.
Early cabbage, which can withstand light frosts, can be planted under covering material.
Reasons for fertilizing the soil before planting seedlings:
- if the soil in the garden bed turns out to be acidic, you need to reduce its acidity by liming;
- the soil may not contain a certain set of nutrients for the cabbage to develop fully;
- the soil is usually contaminated with pathogenic microorganisms and disease-causing agents;
- The planted seedlings experience stress, so in order for the adaptation process to proceed quickly, they should be fed with nutritious fertilizers.
Optimal composition
Cabbage loves organic fertilizer, so add it to the planting holes when planting in the ground. Add 1 cup of rotted humus and 2 teaspoons of lime to the hole to reduce the acidity of the soil (if necessary).
After adding humus to the hole, cover it with a 5 cm layer of soil, and then start planting the seedlings. This must be done so that the plant roots do not get severely burned.
Special watering
After planting, water the cabbage with a weak solution of potassium permanganate to protect the seedlings from black leg.
Correctly planted cabbage seedlings will provide a generous harvest of healthy and useful heads of cabbage in the future.
