If in autumn the need for soil cultivation depends on its type, then in spring the beds should be dug up in any case, regardless of whether the soil is sandy or clayey.

It’s still too early to put an end to this dispute, but for now let’s figure out how to properly dig up garden beds with minimal damage.

Why dig up the beds?

1. Plants like loose soil. By digging or plowing the soil, you can make it airy and light.

2. Compacted soil or earth after stagnant melt water also needs to be dug up.

3. And for those who are lucky and have light and airy soil, in the spring it will be enough to slightly loosen the garden, and then add mulch.

When to dig

In any case, this is done after the melt water has been absorbed and the soil has dried out a little. There is simply no specific date. Some people are unable to get into their garden at all because of the flood.

How to dig

Usually, summer residents try their best, inserting a shovel to the depth of a bayonet, and then diligently turning over and breaking up the layers of earth.

If we talk about depth, then 20 cm is more than enough, but you should not turn over the clods of earth. This is because beneficial microorganisms live in this layer, and when turning the soil, they are immersed to a depth that is not accessible to all garden crops.

After light digging, it will be more useful to sow the garden with green manure, which will loosen the soil no worse than a shovel or plow.
