Nobody stands on ceremony when growing green onions on a windowsill. It's good if the bulbs are placed in soil - often the shoots grow simply in a glass of water.
To avoid wondering why the onions grew bitter, light or tasteless, you need to remember about temperature, lighting and other tricks.
We will tell you about the main nuances that prevent you from growing tasty and healthy green onions.
1. Soil
Often the bulb is left in a glass of water or other structures are used that provide moisture, but not planting in the soil. In this case, the taste will not be the best, and all because the shoots will take nutrition from the bulb that has been lying around all winter.
You can prepare a mixture yourself from garden soil, sawdust and peat (1:1:1); or forest soil, sand and peat in the same proportions; or by mixing garden soil, peat and vermiculite.
2. Temperature
Onions do not need much heat. They germinate within 16-18 degrees. They grow at 18-20 degrees during the day and 13-15 at night. The main thing is not to raise the temperature when there is not enough light.
3. Light
Light is important for all plants. In the case of onions, the feather begins to lighten and stretch, so you need to provide additional lighting for 2-3 hours or lower the temperature.
4. Germination
To speed things up, the bulb neck is cut off and cleaned of dense scales. Before planting, it is warmed up, before cutting and removing scales, after which it is watered with warm water, warmer than room temperature.
5. Top dressing
In a normal situation, root feeding of onions is practiced, but there is no point in fertilizing the onion that grows on the windowsill. This can lead to fattening, and then the feather will turn out brittle and light.
