The desire to save money forces many gardeners to buy the cheapest soil for growing seedlings.
An expert of the online publication Belnovosti, agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh told what components need to be added to the soil in this case to protect seedlings and increase fertility.
So, one of the mandatory additives is vermicompost.
This is nothing more than a nutrient substrate consisting of the so-called "manure" left by Californian worms.
It is needed to provide the soil with useful elements, acids and plant hormones. For 5 glasses of purchased soil, you will need 1 glass of vermicompost.
In addition to vermicompost, it would not hurt to include vermiculite in the composition of purchased soil.
Small round white granules are obtained from hydromica. They contain such useful elements as calcium, potassium, magnesium and iron.
In addition, vermiculite is able to regulate soil moisture by absorbing water and gradually transferring the liquid to plants. A glass of vermiculite is enough for 4 glasses of purchased soil.
Finally, it wouldn’t hurt to add sphagnum to the soil – the phenol it contains serves as an antiseptic that can kill possible bacteria.
