It is no secret that the best solution is to prevent pests from entering the garden rather than deal with the consequences of the damage they cause.

An expert of the online publication Belnovosti, agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh spoke about effective measures to prevent the appearance of cabbage flies in garden beds.

1. Follow crop rotation rules and never plant cabbage in the same place.

2. Use mulch to cover the cabbage beds. Hay, straw, last year's dry leaves and even sunflower seed husks are all perfect for this purpose. Another option is black film or covering material.

3. Before planting the cabbage seedlings, dust the beds with a mixture of equal amounts of tobacco dust and ash. Instead of ash, you can use naphthalene or slaked lime.

4. In the case of purchased seedlings, it would be a good idea to play it safe by adding a preparation created to combat cabbage fly based on diazinon to the soil near the root collar.

5. To prevent the pest from laying eggs, try to simply cover your plantings during the fly's flight. The insect is especially active throughout May during daylight hours.
