Vegetables and fruits are sources of all the vitamins, microelements and nutrients necessary for human health.
But in all the diversity of vegetation, there is probably a vegetable, fruit or leafy green that is a leader in terms of beneficial properties.
Scientists have discovered that this is not even broccoli, but watercress.
Research on this topic was conducted by employees of William Patterson University. The results of the work were published in the journal "Prevention of Chronic Diseases" of the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
Research by scientists
Scientists from the USA compared the health benefits of 41 vegetables, fruits and leafy greens.
The nutritional value, protein, fiber, microelements, vitamins and other useful properties were assessed. A total of 17 key indicators.
In the end, watercress took first place.
It is a leader in terms of fiber and protein content, potassium and calcium, vitamins A, B12 and D.
According to the rating system, the greens scored 100 points out of 100.
Benefits of Watercress
Firstly, watercress has proven to be extremely beneficial for women's health. It improves the production of breast milk and regulates the menstrual cycle.
Secondly, greens help cleanse the body of toxins and improve digestion.
Thirdly, the salad contains antioxidants that fight cancer cells and reduce their destructive effect on the body's cells.
Fourthly, it cleanses the lungs and is recommended for people who have stopped smoking.
Fifthly, the salad improves liver function.
Sixthly, it is useful for respiratory diseases, bronchitis, asthma and shortness of breath.
Interestingly, broccoli came in 19th place, and grapefruit came in last.
But to be fair, it should be noted that the list did not include raspberries, currants, cranberries, onions, or garlic. These were mostly leafy and cruciferous vegetables.
