How to Choose Blackout Curtains: Don't Be Fooled

Blackout curtains are made from a special fabric that does not transmit any light at all – the light absorption coefficient of such material is 90-100%.

This light-absorbing effect was made possible by the multi-layered fabric, says designer Yulia Tychino, an expert at the online publication BelNovosti.

As a rule, blackout curtains consist of three layers: reflective, polyester thread and a decorative layer.

Unfortunately, there are now many unscrupulous sellers who call any thick curtains "blackout". In order not to become a victim of fraud, when choosing curtains, follow these tips.

1. Blackout curtains have an unusual density, they are quite heavy and seem to stand like a stake.

2. Pay attention to the cut of the fabric - there should be visible black threads, which are polyester fibers that absorb light.

3. Carefully examine the back side of the curtain - it may be light or have a metallic sheen, which is a sign of a reflective layer.

4. Use a regular flashlight on your smartphone to check the authenticity of the blackout. Point the light at the material – no light should pass through a real blackout.
