How to tell if your purchased potatoes are suitable for boiling or frying: a five-second test

Did you know that potatoes are divided into several types?

Some tubers are better suited for boiling, others for frying, others for baking, and others for adding to salads.

It all depends on the starch content of the vegetable.

There is a quick way to find out how starchy a potato is.

Yulia Arkhipova, an expert in the field of cooking for the online publication Belnovosti, a chef and fourth-class baker, spoke about a simple five-second test.

Potato Starch Test

Take a tuber, cut it in half and start rubbing the resulting pieces against each other.

The "sticking" of the potato halves indicates a high starch content.

But if the pieces do not stick to each other and if droplets of water appear on the cut, then the vegetable is not starchy.

How to choose a method of heat treatment of potatoes

A vegetable with a low starch content is suitable for boiling: the tubers will not boil over. And cubes made from such potatoes are ideal for salad or soup.

Medium starch content means you need to fry the potatoes: they will come out perfect - crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.

If the potato contains a lot of starch, the vegetable should either be baked or boiled to obtain mashed potatoes.

Baked starchy potatoes turn out crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.

And puree made from nightshade with a high starch content turns out incredibly tender and airy.
