How to Preserve Avocado: The Best Ways at Home

16.12.2024 05:50

It is better to leave unripe avocados lying on the table - at room temperature they will ripen and not spoil.

Ripe or cut fruit can be stored not only in the refrigerator. There are several interesting ways.

Expert of the online publication "BelNovosti" Yulia Arkhipova - a cook and fourth-class baker - told how to do it correctly.

How to Store Whole Fruit

If you want to keep your avocado whole and for as long as possible, place it in the coldest section of your refrigerator and keep it away from ethylene-producing foods.

These are mainly apples, bananas, tomatoes and potatoes.

Near them, the avocado will quickly overripe and spoil.

Sliced avocado

1. If you have sliced fruit at your disposal, it will not last longer than 1-2 days in the refrigerator and only if you store it in a closed container with the pit.

2. Freezing guarantees a longer shelf life (at -18 degrees up to 6 months).

But you need to know how to freeze avocado:

  • you should not do this with the pit, because it contains toxins (after defrosting they may end up in the pulp and cause harm to health);
  • the easiest option is to store them in halves, without pits and skins (be sure to rub them with lemon juice and wrap them in cling film, otherwise they will turn black);
  • do the same if you need to preserve avocado in slices or pieces (just freeze them separately on a cutting board, and then you can put the frozen pieces in a bag);
  • If you have ripe fruits, it is better to make puree (add 1 tbsp of lemon juice to each fruit), and you can freeze them in jars, ice cube trays or bags.

Once defrosted, avocado can be used to make sauces, mousses or soups.
