Millet porridge is a tasty and nutritious dish that can be a great side dish or part of breakfast.
Did you know that millet is also used as a filling for traditional Karelian pies – kalitki? This was told to us by the expert of the online publication BelNovosti, chef Yulia Arkhipova .
But that’s not the point now – we suggest you learn how to properly prepare millet for cooking so that it turns out tasty and crumbly.
Preparing millet for making porridge involves rinsing the grain in cold water until the water becomes clear.
Sometimes housewives face such a problem as bitterness of millet, which can be caused by long-term storage of grains after opening the package.
To avoid a culinary fiasco, soak the millet in boiling water for 5-10 minutes (if the cereal has been stored in an opened package for more than six months, it is recommended to leave it in hot water for an hour).
There is another way to prepare millet, which involves rinsing the grain in cold water, bringing it to a boil, and rinsing it again – this time with hot water. If you do everything right, you will end up with crumbly porridge.
