Improper storage often results in limp and bland carrots.
ADVICE.NEWS told how to extend the shelf life of orange root vegetables.
Storage rules
Before storing, cut off the carrot tops, as they draw moisture out of the vegetable and make it dry and limp. However, washing carrots before storing is not recommended.
Do not leave carrots near apples, bananas, pears. These fruits emit ethylene, which affects the structure of carrots and causes rapid spoilage.
The shelf life of carrots is calculated for several weeks, but it can be increased by placing the fruits in an airtight container with water. Note: the water should be changed weekly.
Carrots that you store in an airtight container with water will stay fresh and juicy for up to 3 weeks.
Another option is a cellar. The low temperature will keep the vegetable fresh for several months.
Before sending the carrots to the cellar, place them in an airtight container.
Finally, there is a third method that will certainly extend the shelf life of carrots and prevent them from going limp – freezing.
To do this, peel, wash the vegetable and cut it as needed or grate it.
This way, you will have freshly chopped carrots on hand all year round. The frozen vegetable can be added to soups, stews, casseroles.
