How to Respond to a Child's Wanting a Tattoo or Piercing: Offer an Alternative

Adolescence is a time of experimentation and searching for one’s “self”.

During this period, children often begin to look for ways to express themselves and change their appearance through hair dyeing, Botox injections, fillers, piercings, tattoos, etc.

At such moments, parents should remember that they cannot prohibit such experiments with their bodies without offering anything in return.

First, explain the risks of underground (and salon) procedures, and then offer a worthy alternative.

For example, consider getting a temporary tattoo. It's like a transfer design that's printed from paper onto damp skin.

The disadvantage is that such decoration does not last long, but at the same time it is also an advantage, because the color, size and pattern can be changed every few days.

If this option is not suitable, you can resort to a henna or mehendi tattoo. They are more durable and can stay on the skin for up to several weeks.

As for piercings, false or fake piercings have long been invented, which are suitable for almost any part of the body.

Let the child choose the most convenient method of fastening: magnets, glue, springs, clamps.

Fake piercings will not cause any pain and look exactly like the real thing.

Finally, you can change your appearance with colored lenses, false hair, extended nails or eyelashes. Even scars can be made with special overlays.

Such changes do not leave behind any irreparable traces, so be sure to tell your teenager about them.
