How to React to a Child's Bad Grades at School: Advice for Parents

Has your child received another "F" at school? Don't punish your child!

Yes, punishments can make a child turn into a good or excellent student.

However, it is unlikely that a schoolchild will have the motivation to gain knowledge.

Good grades will become an end in itself for a boy or girl.

The child will “cram” the material just to avoid getting a “C” and avoid punishment.

There is no need to promise gifts to a schoolchild for good grades either. For the same reason: the kid will “collect” top grades only for the sake of a smartphone/computer/toy. The child will not be interested in gaining knowledge.

Ignoring your son or daughter getting bad grades is also dangerous: the child will come to the conclusion that they don’t have to study at all.

How Should Parents React to Their Child's Bad Grades?

So, we came to the conclusion that it is impossible to punish a schoolchild for "twos". It is also not worth promising gifts for good grades.

The indifference of mom and dad to the child’s poor academic performance is also unacceptable.

How to act then? First of all, parents should understand that school grades are a good, but not always objective way of determining the level of knowledge.

A child could get a “D” due to a bad mood, poor health, unprofessionalism of the teacher, a teacher’s mistake, etc.

Thus, mom and dad should pay attention to the child’s actual knowledge and skills.

If the "two" was an accident, then it's not a big deal.

If a bad grade was received due to poorly learned material, then you need to help the student understand the topic.

As for rewards, they are quite acceptable. Just don't promise gifts for good grades in advance.

Giving a present for good study should be a surprise for a student. In this case, getting the highest marks will not become an end in itself for the child.
