Sometimes parents don’t think about the fact that it is their behavior that has the most negative impact on their children’s choice of profession.
To avoid making a mistake, you need to remember that a child’s point of view on the exact and humanities sciences is formed already at the age of 6.
Foreign scientists decided to find out how early familiarity with exact disciplines affects the length of a child’s education in the area of knowledge that interests him.
The results of this work were summed up in the publication Psychological Bulletin.
Children and the exact sciences
It turns out that a predisposition to subjects such as mathematics, physics or chemistry can be formed in a 6-year-old child.
This is confirmed by data from 98 studies that surveyed 145,000 children from 33 countries.
What was found out?
1. Girls are better at humanities.
2. By the age of 6, boys show interest in computer science and engineering in general.
3. Interest in mathematics does not depend on the child’s gender at all – boys and girls learn it equally well.
But it was precisely the stereotypes of parents that led to the gender gap in the professions representing these sciences.
Scientists are calling for children to be taught the exact sciences from an early age, to be told about the importance of specialties, and at the same time to avoid stereotypes about male and female professions.
