Should Children Be Punished for Misbehavior: Let's Look at an Example

Punishment is a topic that can be called quite controversial and even “slippery”.

First, let's try to answer the question of why they exist at all. It seems that the answer is obvious - so that the guilty person would be imbued with what he did and would not repeat this bad deed.

But, unfortunately or fortunately, this approach does not always work.

Let's look at an example: a child was playing with a ball at home, which caused his parents' favorite vase to break.

Bad behavior? Definitely yes, which means mom and dad need to take some action for educational purposes. Otherwise, the child will come to the conclusion that breaking vases with a ball is quite normal.

What to do instead of punishment

We suggest considering an alternative plan of action in such a situation, which can be used instead of punishment.

1. Make sure you and your baby are calm and willing to interact. If your baby is upset or hysterical, try to calm him down.

2. Make sure your child understands what he did wrong and what exactly he did wrong. If he has a hard time understanding, help him understand by explaining that you loved this vase, it cost a certain amount of money, etc.

3. Find a solution to how the current situation could be corrected. In the case of the vase, for example, suggest that the child apologize to you, and then try to glue the product together.

Such actions will be much more effective than standing in the corner or banning cartoons.

Earlier we talked about whether it is possible to give a child a phone while eating.
