What to do if your child has confused day and night: 5 steps to fix it

28.05.2024 12:54

Sleepless nights and chronic sleep deprivation are a problem that parents of children who have confused day with night often face.

You shouldn't let things slide - the first thing you should do is think about the reasons for this behavior. If colic, ear pain, high temperature and other health-related factors prevent your baby from sleeping at night, seek help from a pediatrician.

In all other cases, you will need to follow the following plan.

1. Don't let your child sleep too much during the day.

It is unlikely that the baby will want to sleep peacefully at night if he has slept enough for a week in a day. If the baby wants to sleep, try to delay the time of falling asleep, distracting him with conversations, songs, games, etc., and when he falls asleep, wake him up in two hours.

2. Help spend as much energy as possible

To tire out your baby and ensure that he (and you) gets a good night's sleep, play with him as much as possible, go for walks outside, do gymnastics, etc.

3. Provide suitable conditions for sleep

The baby will sleep like a baby if the air temperature in the room is at 18-20 degrees and the humidity is 50-70%.

4. Establish a feeding routine

Organize your baby's feeding so that he eats between 11:00 PM and midnight. If your baby is already on solids, offer him a nutritious milk-and-cereal porridge or welling at night. If your baby is breastfed or formula-fed, try to underfeed him a little between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM to increase his appetite before bed.

5. Bathe your baby before bedtime

Use an evening bath before the last feeding. This will help the baby to use up energy, work up an appetite and spend time with parents before bed.
