An irresistible urge to scratch your nose can be one of the symptoms of a serious illness.
Why does the nose itch?
An itchy nose can be caused by a cold or allergies. In some cases, we want to scratch our nose because of rhinitis or sinusitis, and sometimes the cause is polyps.
Discomfort is also caused by irritation of the skin on the nose or skin diseases - in such a situation, there is an unbearable desire to rub the nose.
Unexpected causes of itching include migraines, multiple sclerosis and stress.
When to consult a doctor
As a rule, itching in the nose goes away on its own after some time. If this is your case, there is no reason to worry.
However, if the itching or tingling becomes persistent or is accompanied by other symptoms such as flaking, pain in the nose, bleeding, or fever, you should consult a doctor.
For starters, you can limit yourself to a general practitioner. The doctor will conduct an examination, ask questions about your health and lifestyle, and may suggest taking blood tests or a skin scraping.
All these procedures must be done to make a diagnosis.
After determining the cause of the itching in the nose, the doctor will advise how to eliminate the discomfort.
Or refer you to a specialist such as an otolaryngologist, dermatologist, neurologist, allergist or rheumatologist.
