You may have seen videos of people buying grated cheese and rinsing it under water.

According to them, this way they get rid of harmful additives present in the product.

Indeed, an anti-caking agent is added to grated cheeses – it is needed to prevent the pieces of shredded cheese from sticking together.

Its main ingredient is cellulose, which is made from sawdust and cotton.

What do the experts say? To be honest, they have not come to a consensus – some specialists are convinced of the benefits of rinsing, while others consider the procedure unnecessary.

Thus, a chemical engineer from Minnesota assures that cellulose does not pose a health hazard and can even be beneficial to the body, since it is a source of fiber, which is known to have a beneficial effect on the intestines.

But Dr. Paul Saladino clearly demonstrated the result of washing grated cheese - on video he captured the cloudy water that remained after the manipulations.

According to the doctor, this is the preservative natamycin, which increases shelf life and protects products from mold, but can negatively affect intestinal health.
