There are several warning signs that indicate that the psychologist you are seeing is not qualified.
Only specialists with a higher medical education and a valid certificate have the right to make a diagnosis and prescribe medications. Mental disorders can be diagnosed by psychiatrists and neurologists, not psychologists.
A good psychologist will never treat your problems as trifles that are not worth worrying about. During the session, the client should feel that his interlocutor fully understands and accepts him, so that he can fully open up to the specialist and work through his request.
If a psychologist hides his educational documents from you, this is a reason to be wary, as is a refusal to explain how he works and what methods he uses. In addition, you have the right to know whether the specialist has undergone supervision and personal therapy.
Phrases like: “How could you do that?”, “What were you thinking?” or “You should be ashamed” should not be heard during a session. A psychologist with sufficient qualifications strives to avoid value judgments and especially reproaches or condemnation, as this is unethical and can seriously harm the client.
