Many gardeners and flower lovers know that winter can be a serious challenge for perennials.
Some of them may be too sensitive to low temperatures, falling snow or piercing winds.
An expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", agronomist and landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh listed those perennial flowers that should be covered for the winter.
The first list is plants that need to be covered with special materials or shelters. These include:
1. Roses. They need good protection from frost and snow. Most often, burlap, spunbond, dry leaves or fallen leaves are used for them.
2. Chrysanthemums. They can survive frosts down to -10 degrees, but in more northern regions they need to be covered for the winter.
3. Dahlias. These delicate flowers need good protection from frost and temperature changes.
4. Dahlias. Beautiful perennial flowers that sometimes cannot stand the winter cold.
In addition, there are many plants that can be left uncovered over the winter. These include:
1. Irises. These plants can survive frosts down to -25 degrees, so they do not need additional protection.
2. Lilies of the valley. They are able to survive the most severe frosts without any harm to themselves.
3. Phloxes. These plants also do not need additional protection for the winter, as they tolerate frosts well.
4. Tulips. Although they are not perennial flowers, you need to decide what to do with them in the winter. In some regions, they need to be dug up and stored in a warm place, while in others, they can be left in the ground.
Proper winter protection of perennial flowers will help preserve them and decorate your garden next season. Remember that proper plant care is the key to successful gardening.
