What to grow seedlings in: rules for choosing and the best container options were named for gardeners

Summer residents pay great attention to the choice of seeds and soil for future seedlings. In terms of containers, everything is a little simpler.

Often used are last year's containers, time-tested boxes, as well as folk designs such as eggshells and other homemade structures.

Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", an agronomist and landscape designer, told us what is the best way to grow seedlings.

First of all, it is necessary to take into account the developmental features of the future plant. That is, whether it likes transplantation, whether it needs picking, and so on.

Capacity requirements

1. This should be a large container for normal development of the root system.

2. It must have drainage holes, otherwise excess moisture will provoke the development of rot and fungus.

3. The structure must be rigid and opaque to protect the roots from damage and sunlight.

What is the best way to grow seedlings?

Wooden boxes

You can make them yourself. They have practically no disadvantages, except that a wooden box with soil that gets wet from watering becomes even heavier.

Sour cream cups

Like any other, containers from fermented milk products can be safely used in this matter.

There is one condition: you need to wash it thoroughly.

Peat cups

They are called ideal for cucumbers, peppers, eggplants and other capricious crops. You can even leave the seedlings in the ground in the beds without transplanting them.

But you will have to water more often and more carefully. Peat absorbs water, and if there is too much, the container may become moldy.

An alternative to cups are peat tablets. They act as a growth stimulant, a source of fertilizers and at the same time are a container protected by a special mesh.

But they are not cheap and you cannot allow the tablets to dry out.

Bottles

But the most popular among summer residents is a plastic bottle. You can use it to build a mini-greenhouse and an irrigation system, and when transplanting seedlings, you can easily cut it with scissors without damaging the roots.

When using any of the suggested options, do not forget that the seeding container must be disinfected before starting.

This can be done with a solution of copper sulfate or potassium permanganate.
