Many gardeners grow this crop not only as a vegetable, but also as an ornamental one. Jerusalem artichoke grows quite tall, which allows it to be used as a hedge in the summer. But every year it will grow more and more, pushing aside other plants.
One plus is that the plant does not cause any other harm and the soil after it remains ready for planting other crops.
Digging up the soil after it is absolutely useless. Next spring the roots will grow and the plant will be in its place.
How to get rid of
1. If you have already decided to dig, then you need to dig thoroughly and regularly. At the same time, you need to carefully select the roots and tubers, this is very long and tedious, but otherwise the plant cannot be defeated.
2. Between diggings, the soil should be covered to prevent sunlight from penetrating. It is better to use black opaque film, roofing felt or linoleum. The cover is left from autumn to spring.
3. And if the first two options have not helped, or there is no time to wait, then the only option left is to treat with herbicides, for example, Roundup.
If you want to leave a couple of roots, you will have to fence off the planting site by digging slate or other material into the ground to a depth of up to one meter. This way, the Jerusalem artichoke roots will definitely not grow.
