How to Properly Reward Children for Good Behavior and Success: 3 Important Rules for Parents to Note

30.03.2024 00:30

Parents should not only punish their children for bad behavior, but also reward them for good deeds.

Otherwise, children will feel unfair and lose motivation.

But you shouldn't overdo it with "rewards". Otherwise, the baby will become selfish, capricious, calculating and insincere.

There are cases when you can do without gifts and money, limiting yourself to verbal praise and affection.

In some situations it is worth doing without “rewards” and words altogether.

So how should you reward children for good behavior? It is important to follow three rules - and everything will be fine.

Don't reward natural behavior

You shouldn't give gifts to a child because he doesn't make noise, doesn't scream, and doesn't misbehave.

There is no need to reward your child for actions that he should periodically perform without any incentives (doing homework, cleaning his room, washing dishes).

If mom and dad ignore this rule, the child will most likely turn into a manipulator.

Praise not the baby, but his actions

But if a child has done something more serious (for example, helped his parents during a difficult time), then he should be rewarded.

But you just need to explain why exactly the baby is receiving praise or a gift.

Just be happy with your baby

Some achievements are rewards in themselves for children. For example, winning competitions.

In such cases, parents should not give gifts to their child. But they should rejoice together with their child, praise him with words and hug him.

Earlier we named 5 things that should not be forbidden to a child.
