How to Teach Your Child Not to Take Sweets from Strangers: This Explanation Will Be Enough

Any parent sooner or later thinks about how to explain to a child that accepting fruits, candy, toys, or any other gifts from a stranger is not a good idea.

How can you make sure your baby understands you?

Perhaps the most important thing you need to do is to tell your child about the criteria you use to judge whether an “offering” can be accepted or whether it is better to refuse it.

For example, if you meet an old friend at the playground who warmly treats you to cookies, you will probably take the treat and give it to your child. So why is it okay to accept sweets from this aunt, but not from the granny sitting at the entrance, since she occupies the bench here every day.

In this case, if you took a candy from someone's hands, explain to your son or daughter why you did it. The simplest words will do: "This aunt's name is Masha and we've known her for a long time. I trust her and am ready to take what she offers. But we don't know this granny well enough to trust her, despite the fact that she sits here every day."

In such situations, you can also add that while you are near the child, you make decisions about who can take what is offered and who cannot.

Be sure to list the criteria by which you trust people.

This way, the child will learn to determine for himself where he can treat himself to ice cream and where he should refuse.
