The harm of late dinners was determined to be proven by employees of the Open University of Catalonia and Columbia University.
It turns out that a dinner that is not eaten a couple of hours before going to bed, but one that occurs after 5 p.m. is considered harmful.
The results of the scientific work were published in the scientific journal Nutrition and Diabetes.
To participate in the work, specialists recruited a group of 26 people.
The volunteers were between 50 and 75 years old, and all were overweight or obese.
Some were diagnosed with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.
The experiment participants were then divided into two groups.
Some were fed until 5:00 p.m., and others a little later.
They prepared absolutely the same food for everyone, and their calorie consumption was also the same.
The only difference was in the time of meals.
It turns out that a late dinner can be defined as food eaten after 5 p.m.
As the experts found, consuming 45% or more of a person's daily calories after the specified time led to the risk of developing diabetes.
The disease develops because the body's ability to regulate blood sugar levels is reduced under the influence of a late dinner.
The fact is that the body absorbs glucose worse at night.
This is due to a decrease in insulin secretion and cell sensitivity to the hormone due to the circadian rhythm.
