Do you like bananas? Chances are you will answer yes to this question, as this fruit is one of the favorites for many people.
It does have one, but rather significant, drawback: its ability to spoil quickly.
Why Do Bananas Go Soft and Brown?
The reason should be sought in natural gas – ethylene.
It promotes the rapid conversion of starch into sugar, which is why bananas change their color from yellow to brown quite quickly, and their pleasant elastic texture changes to an overly soft one.
Unfortunately, bananas continue to emit this gas even after harvesting, which, of course, does not contribute to their long-term storage.
Which bananas don't spoil for a long time?
If you don't intend to eat bananas that have turned dark on the second day after purchase, you should take a responsible approach to the process of choosing them.
At the store, ignore bananas packaged in plastic bags.
If there is no choice and all the fruit is wrapped in plastic, look for bags with holes - in such packaging, at least, ethylene does not linger.
How to Keep Bananas Fresh for 2 Weeks
To slow down the process of banana spoilage, it is worth following certain rules regarding the storage of these fruits.
Don't leave bananas with other fruits - put them in a separate place and, preferably, separate them from each other.
Bananas are stored at room temperature away from direct sunlight. High temperatures and high humidity are not recommended.
To slow down the process of ethylene production, banana stems can be wrapped in cling film or plastic.
For the same purpose, you can put the fruit at the peak of ripeness in the refrigerator. Even if the skin turns black, the pulp will be fine.
