Another powerful flare has occurred on the Sun: should we expect a magnetic storm?

On December 10, an M6.4 class flare occurred on the Sun.

This is the third powerful solar flare in the last three days.

Will there be a magnetic storm?

According to the Institute of Applied Geophysics of Roshydromet, the M6.4 class flare was recorded at 09:48 Moscow time.

The flare lasted 19 minutes and disrupted HF radio communications.

Subsequently, two more M-class flares occurred, but they were weaker.

The first, which occurred at 10:09 Moscow time, lasted 12 minutes and reached class M1.4.

The second, class M1.5, occurred at 14:02 Moscow time and lasted 14 minutes. Both flashes were accompanied by disruption of HF radio communications.

As reported by the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy of the Space Research Institute and the Institute of Solar Terrestrial Physics, the M6.4 class flare occurred on the eastern edge of the Sun, literally out of nowhere.

In the morning there was no active area here at all, the scientists said.

According to them, this may indicate the formation of a new center. As for the main region of the Sun, located directly opposite the Earth, it has not yet manifested itself in any way.

Scientists added that the M6.4 flare will not lead to a magnetic storm.

There will be no consequences from the outbreak, the laboratory said.

Let us recall that on December 8, a flare of the highest X class occurred on the Sun. On the same day, a flare of class M3.2 was registered.

Solar flares are divided into 5 classes: A, B, C, M and X. Typically, a solar flare causes emissions of solar plasma, clouds of which, reaching the Earth, can lead to magnetic storms.
