This story is similar to a children's horror story that pioneers told each other before going to bed.
But this is not fiction or folklore, but a real case, after which Lake Nyos in Cameroon was called the deadliest in the world.
The Deadliest Lake
It happened in August 1986. Farmers living on the shore of the ill-fated lake heard a strange noise that day.
Foamy splashes and a white cloud appeared on the surface of the water, which grew in size.
When the cloud grew to 100 meters in height, it began to move along the ground.
The farmers who came out to see the strange natural phenomenon instantly lost consciousness.
Soon the cloud reached the peasant settlement. People in it, as well as on the roads or in the fields, lost consciousness or died, barely having time to take a few breaths.
In the first two villages that were covered by the cloud, only four people who lived on higher ground survived.
After two days the cloud dissolved.
The bodies of dead people and animals were discovered several days later.
After this incident, the lake itself became shallow and the water turned red.
What Science Says
Scientists explain this phenomenon by the emission of carbon dioxide. Scientists do not have a unified opinion explaining the phenomenon.
Presumably, the release triggered a landslide on one of the lake's walls.
The lake is still considered dangerous.
