How long can an incandescent light bulb burn?
The total burning time is considered to be one thousand hours.
In other words, the average light bulb can work continuously for 42 days.
However, in the USA there is a lamp that has been working for… 123 years!
The device, which has been unofficially dubbed the "Centennial Lamp," hangs in a fire station in one of the towns in the United States.
What is known about the "Centennial Lamp"
The device was manufactured by The Shelby Electric Company .
It began operating in 1901. At first, the lamp was located in the fire department building, then in a garage, and then in the municipality building.
The light bulb appeared in the fire department of the small Californian town of Livermore in 1976.
It doesn't burn very brightly, but it lasts a long time. We only turned it off a few times.
For 123 years of almost continuous operation, the lamp never burned out.
The secret of such a long operation of the device is its very low power.
In addition, the bulb was created using carbon filaments instead of tungsten. Due to manufacturing difficulties, this production option has long been abandoned.
Is the lamp really working since 1901
There is no absolute certainty about this. The fact is that there is no evidence of such a long period of work: statements about the uniqueness of the "Centennial Lamp" are based on the recollections of old-timers, as well as people who have long since passed away.
American journalists first noticed the unusual device only in 1972.
However, experts are currently "keeping an eye" on the lamp. Therefore, there is still evidence of continuous operation over the past few years.
In any case, the Centennial Lamp is mentioned in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest lasting.
