It recently became known that the Latvian government has decided to extend the regime of enhanced control on the border with Belarus.

The relevant information appeared on the official website of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Baltic Republic.

It says that Riga is extending the enhanced border system regime in some administrative territories.

We are talking about Ludza, Kraslava, Augsdaugava and Daugavpils counties.

According to the Belta agency, which has reviewed the published information, this regime has been extended until June 30 of next year.

The government justified the decision taken by the continuing “migration pressure” on the Latvian-Belarusian border.

According to media reports, the Cabinet of Ministers of Latvia made the decision to introduce a heightened state of emergency for the first time at the end of summer 2023.

The last time the state of emergency in the areas bordering Belarus was extended was on September 10, 2024, until the end of the year.

Latvia first declared a state of emergency on August 11, 2021, and has since extended it several times.

Since then, according to data from Latvian authorities, more than 6,500 attempts to illegally cross the border have been prevented.

The Latvian authorities believe that Minsk is allegedly creating “migration pressure” on the European Union.

Belarusian officials called the accusation unsubstantiated.
