Why Do Dogs Love Rolling in Smelly Things? They Have Their Reasons

Our four-legged friends have many “unusual” hobbies: for example, many of them are delighted by the idea of rolling around in some foul-smelling substance.

Why dogs like to cover themselves in disgusting smells remains a mystery even to eminent scientists.

However, they still had several suggestions on this matter.

1. The dog may be trying to hide its own scent.

He is driven to take this step by an ancient instinct: long ago, dogs had to get their own food.

To avoid scaring off their prey, they could roll around in the victim's feces and thereby mask their smell.

2. This behavior may be an attempt to communicate with its pack or at least with a person.

This is, at least, what wolves sometimes do: after sniffing a wolf from their pack who has rolled around in some smell, all the others follow him to its source.

3. Finally, a dog can roll in rotten meat to leave its own scent, that is, to mark its territory.

The pet uses this technique to show other animals that this territory already has an owner, and it is him.

If you don't want your pet to smell like a pile of trash, try to keep him on a leash anywhere he might roll around in the dirt.

As soon as the dog does its business, clean up its excrement. And, of course, try to make sure that the animal learns the command "no".
