Is your dog barking into thin air or chasing an invisible target?
Researchers from Stanford University have put forward a sensational hypothesis: dogs can detect changes in electromagnetic fields that humans cannot sense.
"This explains why they react to an approaching thunderstorm or earthquake," says geophysicist Michael Hess.
But how is this connected to the other world? In many cultures, dogs are considered guides between worlds.
For example, in Mexico they believe that xoloitzcuintle accompanies the souls of the dead. Modern cases are also surprising: the owner of a Labrador, Anna from Voronezh, said that her dog barked every evening at the corner of the room, where an old photograph of the previous owner of the house was later found.
Scientists are still sceptical. Dr James Serpell of Cambridge says:
"Dogs react to infrasound (below 20 Hz), which can come from technology or natural phenomena."
But even skeptics admit that some cases remain unexplained. For example, in 2019, a dog named Bucks from Ohio howled for three days near a closet where a cat was later found walled in, having survived without food or water.
