With proper care, a domestic cat can live a very long life.
However, our mustachioed pets begin to age quite early.
We tell you at what age cats are considered old and how to help an elderly pet.
At what age is a cat considered old?
Aging in cats begins at about 7 years of age. A cat aged 7-10 years is considered aging, 11-14 years is considered elderly, and from 15 years is considered very elderly.
You can tell that your cat has started to age by the following signs.
Firstly, loss of appetite and weight. As cats age, their teeth wear down and their gums often become inflamed.
This results in a decrease in appetite and, consequently, weight.
Secondly, the cat has begun to age if it no longer jumps on the cabinets. This is due to the decrease in elasticity of the joints.
Signs of aging may also include: decreased activity, increased sleep duration, increased tearing, problems with bowel movements, and dull coat.
How to help an elderly pet? First, you need to choose food that is appropriate for the age.
Secondly, place an additional litter box in the apartment, for example, in the hallway.
Thirdly, move the pet's bed lower. However, you can't place the bed on the floor, the cat may catch a cold.
You should also take your pet to the veterinarian more often.
