Warm and thick fur does not mean that pets are ready to face the autumn-winter period.
It is precisely the coat that needs the owner's attention at this time of year. Otherwise, the dog may develop chronic diseases or aggravate existing ones.
Zakon.kz reports how to properly prepare a dog for the cold period, citing a veterinarian.
First, take care of the coat
During the cold season, the dog's coat and skin require special attention.
The reason for this is not only the frost, but also heating in houses, which can increase molting.
It is important to brush your pet to prevent tangles from forming.
But it is recommended to bathe a dog in winter as rarely as possible. In some cases, it will be better to refuse water procedures altogether.
Short-haired dogs need to buy special clothing.
Secondly, walks
The dog needs to be protected from hypothermia, and the pet's paws from frostbite. For this, you can use shoes or a special ointment that will protect the skin on the paw pads from cracking and dermatitis.
Maintain hygiene of claws and paw pads, treat, trim, and inspect after walks.
If the wounds on the dog's paws do not heal for more than a week, or dark spots appear on the skin, you should contact a veterinarian. These may be signs of frostbite.
Thirdly, diet
Dogs that like to spend a lot of time outdoors during the cold season need more caloric food.
In order not to change the food, you can increase the frequency of meals or the portion size. But it is better to consult with a veterinarian.
