Many dog owners have encountered a situation when their pet enthusiastically pounces on a stick, growls, bares its teeth, as if it wants to tear it into pieces.
From a scientific point of view, this behavior is consistent with the dog's "nature."
The pet, attacking the stick, fulfills its subconscious predator program - it gnaws the “prey”, releasing accumulated energy.
At this moment, the dog’s nervous system gets a release – especially when the owner actively participates in the game: throws a stick, tries to take it away as a joke, etc.
It is also beneficial for the dog's oral health. The dog massages the gums, removes plaque from the teeth, trains the muscles and ligaments, improves blood circulation in the oral cavity, which is especially important for dogs that eat wet food.
But not everything is so clear-cut.
A dog gnawing on a stick may miscalculate its strength and damage its teeth. The stick may also injure the mucous membrane if it has sharp edges. In addition, there is always a risk of infection, especially if the branch broken off from the tree has already been gnawed by other animals.
Such games are prohibited for puppies with their baby teeth.
Veterinarians recommend using special chew toys for playing with dogs, such as rope rings or figures made of durable rubber.
These toys are easy to clean, durable and flexible, which reduces the risk of damage to the dog's teeth and oral mucosa.
