People are mistaken in thinking that cats communicate with each other only through their voices.

According to experts, this process is built differently in animals than in humans. They have at least three methods at their disposal.

Experts have explained how cats communicate with each other and whether they need to be close to each other to do so.

Cats often live alone, demonstrating their independence from their relatives or humans.

However, neither domestic nor wild animals can live without communication at all.

How do cats communicate?

The animal has three options to choose from:

  • voice;
  • body language;
  • smells.

1. Voice data, or vocalization, is the most common and simple option.

But, in addition to meowing and purring, animals hiss, growl, and sometimes howl eerily.

There is also the tonality and intonation of a cat's "meow".

2. As for body language, mood is determined by the behavior of the tail, the position of the ears, and the expression of the eyes.

It is easy to read on a cat’s body whether it is peaceful or ready to pounce on the offender.

3. Smells are a well-known way for all owners of uncastrated cats to communicate and protect their territory.

Wild cats leave marks where they live, while domestic cats mark everything: furniture, walls, and even the owner’s clothes.
