It is unlikely that you will be able to guess the signs of hypothermia in a dog if you do not know the symptoms. Many people simply believe that if a dog has thick fur, it should not freeze during a walk.
Here are some sure signs that it's time to end your walk.
The dog will have very cold ears, paw pads and nose bridge. Its breathing will be fast and shallow, writes Veterinary Science and Life, citing specialists from the Sverdlovsk Region Veterinary Department.
Signs of Hypothermia in Dogs
Firstly, the dog’s behavior will change, it will become lethargic, apathetic, and unwilling to move or change position.
Secondly, you can understand that the dog is overcooled by measuring the body temperature. If the indicator is below 37 degrees, then there is no doubt.
How to keep a dog warm
You need to go to a warm place, but you can’t place your pet close to a heat source.
It is important that the animal warms up gradually; you can cover the dog with a blanket, give it warm food and water.
However, it is better not to use heating pads, rubbing, or other radical methods, as this can damage the dog’s skin.
Prevention
You should avoid long walks in the cold or buy overalls that are appropriate for the season and size.
After bathing, the dog can be taken outside no earlier than 3-4 hours later.
You should not leave your pet tied up near a store or in a car.
