Despite the fact that it is difficult to classify a turtle as an active pet, this does not prevent us from enjoying watching their behavior. Moreover, it is believed that such a pastime can calm the nerves and help relieve stress.

As a rule, it is customary to keep red-eared turtles as pets, there are several other options, and each of them has its own characteristics.

African tortoise

A distinctive feature of the species is that these turtles cannot completely retract their heads into their shells.

African turtles are kept in large quantities of clean water. The acceptable temperature is not lower than 21 degrees Celsius. Their favorite treats are lettuce and grated carrots.

Eastern Box Turtle

Such a pet needs space and a humid environment. For keeping it, you will need a warm room with a large pond.

Please note: Eastern box turtles are best avoided as they do not enjoy being handled and are not particularly brave.

Painted Turtle

The species got its name due to the characteristic pattern on its shell. Like other turtles, painted turtles need an aquarium with a filter and a heater.

This pet is also quite timid and does not like to be picked up. However, painted turtles eventually get used to their owners and are even able to recognize them.

Common Musk Turtle

Caring for these pets is not much different from caring for other pets. The only difference is that musk turtles are not happy when you mess around with them for a long time, which is why they can show aggression and even become a source of a specific smell.
