Compliments are not always beautiful and pleasant.
There are types of praise that upset and anger people.
The person who says such phrases feels like he is improving his relationships with his interlocutors.
In fact, the opposite effect is achieved.
Don't want to ruin your relationships with your family, friends and colleagues? Then don't give such compliments.
"You look great today"
It would seem that the words are wonderful. But the word "today" spoils everything.
A person who hears such a compliment will probably think: "So, in the previous days I looked worse? Is this what they are hinting at?"
"You look great for your age"
The first two words are quite enough. The rest of the phrase is clearly superfluous.
Don't remind a person of his age.
"This is a great result for a woman/man"
When praising a person for this or that achievement, avoid gender stereotypes.
The interlocutor may perceive such praise as mockery.
