What is known about the Nipah virus outbreak in India

The outbreak has been reported in the city of Kozhikode. Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has announced that a team of experts has been sent to Kerala to analyse the situation and assist the state government in combating the virus.

According to the publication, relatives of one of the deceased were placed in the intensive care unit with symptoms of infection.

However, doctors are not considering the possibility of an epidemic, since Nipah, due to its high mortality rate (70%), spreads rather slowly.

Unlike most infections, Nipah affects the brain and is accompanied by severe headaches from the very beginning of the disease.

In 2018, 17 people died from the virus in India, and in 2022, the death of one child was officially confirmed.
