It is generally accepted that women in relationships are in a dependent position on the man and therefore are often considered the less protected party.
But after studying the forms of manipulation, scientists came to an unexpected conclusion. It turned out that in this regard, it is men who are less protected.
Israeli scientists have found that in couples with manipulation and gaslighting in particular, men are more likely to encounter it.
The results of the work were published in the journal Social and Personal Relationships.
Research by scientists
A survey was conducted in which respondents were asked to rate on a scale from 1 to 5 the nature of the actions they encounter with their partner.
It is known that more than 500 Israelis and almost 400 Americans over the age of 18 who were in romantic relationships took part in the research.
What was found out?
Gaslighting in relationships (when one person tries to convince another that he or she misunderstands or doesn’t remember something) is more common among men.
It also turned out that victims of gaslighting were the closest to depression, and did not rate the quality of their relationships very highly.
Until recently, it was believed that women were more likely to encounter this type of manipulation.
Presumably, women in such situations use the most sophisticated forms of aggression.
It has also been suggested that men and women experience gaslighting differently.
