Canadian psychologists have named a word that can be used to determine the satisfaction of spouses with family life.
This word is the pronoun "we".
What psychologists have found out
According to a study by psychologists from Canada's Concordia University, published in the journal Personal Relationships, emphasizing the pronouns "we" and "us" (we-talk practice) when talking about events experienced together with a spouse indicates greater satisfaction with the marriage.
Canadian psychologists came to this conclusion after conducting a meta-analysis of 30 studies devoted to the practice of we-talk.
The scientists also conducted their own study involving 77 married couples.
The study found that couples who used we-talk less experienced a decline in marital satisfaction over time. This did not happen for couples who frequently used “we” and “us.”
According to the study's authors, this pattern is explained by the fact that the practice of we-talk makes spouses perceive each other as a team. This, in turn, has a positive effect on marriage.
