Many summer residents are convinced of the danger of winter pruning of trees growing in the garden.

Such gardeners believe that the procedure should be carried out either in spring or autumn.

In fact, some woody plants can be pruned even in January.

However, there are a few nuances that should not be forgotten.

Under what conditions is winter pruning of trees acceptable?

First of all, it shouldn't be too cold.

The procedure can only be carried out if January is not very cold: the average daily air temperature should not be below -5 degrees.

Secondly, there should be no precipitation during the pruning period.

Thirdly, the summer resident must make sure that no temperature changes are expected in the coming days.

Fourthly, the trees must be in winter dormancy.

What trees can be pruned in January

During the first month of the year (and also in February), a summer resident can prune the following trees:

  • apple trees;
  • pears;
  • plums.

First, you need to remove the shoots. Then you need to cut off the diseased and dry side shoots.

Trees also need to be cleared of branches growing inward.

If you follow all these recommendations and do not make any mistakes, then you will most likely reap a bountiful harvest this year.
