It is difficult to imagine a vegetable garden without onions. It is considered an unpretentious crop, but it has plenty of enemies.
Insects attack the onion harvest, weeds prevent it from growing, and illiterate neighbors in the beds can also harm the harvest.
Anastasia Kovrizhnykh, an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti" - a scientist, agronomist and landscape designer, told which plants should not be planted next to onions.
You can't do that
1. You cannot plant beans and peas nearby, as they attract pests and compete with onions for nutrients.
2. Sage and asparagus are not the best option. They slow down the growth of onions and worsen their taste.
3. Broccoli and cauliflower require different conditions and have a negative effect on each other.
Best options
It would be better to plant carrots and beets nearby, which repel the onion fly.
Tomatoes, peppers, as well as cucumbers and leafy greens (lettuce and spinach) promote the development of the vegetable.
It is also important to remember that onions can be planted in the same place no earlier than 3-4 years later.
