The last ten days of November are ideal for pre-winter protection of compost.
It is during this period that the contents of the compost bin or compost pit should be covered with hay.
This recommendation was shared by the expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", agronomist and landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh.
Why Cover Compost With Hay In Late Fall
This procedure is the beginning of the process of preparing the compost heap for winter.
The mass is insulated before the start of the frost period.
Once there is a layer of hay on the compost, put some not very dense material on the resulting “structure”. Ideal options are burlap and spunbond.
Pay special attention to protecting the central part of the compost heap, where there are many worms and microorganisms involved in the process of creating organic fertilizer.
Insulating the compost in November does not guarantee that the decomposition process will continue during the cold season.
But the summer resident can be sure of the following: all components will “overwinter” normally.
At the beginning of the next season, the composting process will be restored in time and will proceed quite quickly. The owner of a country plot will soon receive a luxurious fertilizer.
For reference
Hay is the dried stems and leaves of herbaceous plants, mown while green, before they reach full natural maturity.
