If you want your "green pets" to be healthy, take care (among other things) of good soil drainage.
According to the expert of the online publication BelNovosti, scientist-agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh, the accumulation of moisture in the soil leads to the root system of plants beginning to suffocate and rot, as a result of which the flower dies.
The Importance of Proper Drainage
As you know, plants need oxygen.
If the soil is waterlogged, which happens due to poor drainage, the air spaces are filled with water, not oxygen. This inhibits the roots, preventing them from breathing normally and absorbing water and nutrients.
What are the dangers of poor drainage?
Lack of proper drainage can cause serious problems.
1. Perhaps most often the root system begins to rot, the leaves turn yellow, turn brown and wither.
2. Another unpleasant consequence is the accumulation of salts. Minerals accumulated in the water and excess fertilizers lead to the formation of sediments that negatively affect plants.
3. Fungi and pests develop in such an environment, since constant humidity creates favorable conditions for them.
How to improve drainage
Plants should be placed in pots equipped with drainage holes from which excess water will flow out.
If there are none, make them using a drill or replace the flowerpot with a new one.
In addition, it is worth working on improving the soil structure.
For this purpose, you can use additives such as crushed bark, peat moss, perlite or sphagnum.
Don't forget to regularly repot your plants into a new pot with fresh soil. It's a good idea to loosen the soil around the roots with a fork or your fingers, and not to compact the soil too much.
