Winter garlic is a crop that requires special attention when planting. Proper preparation of the hole and the introduction of necessary additives become the key to obtaining large, aromatic heads of garlic in the coming season.

Anastasia Kovrizhnykh, an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", a scientist, agronomist and landscape designer, told how to apply fertilizers.

Basic additives for winter garlic pits

Humus and compost. Organic matter is the basis of nutrition for winter garlic. Humus and compost enrich the soil with essential microelements, improve its structure and water permeability. It is recommended to add a handful of rotted manure or compost to the bottom of each hole.

Wood ash. Ash is a valuable source of potassium and phosphorus, which are necessary for the formation of large bulbs and strengthening the immunity of plants. Adding a tablespoon of ash to the hole helps prevent the development of fungal diseases and improves the taste of garlic.

Sand. Sand improves soil drainage, which is especially important for winter garlic, which does not tolerate stagnant water. A handful of sand at the bottom of the hole ensures the outflow of excess moisture and prevents root rot.

Mineral fertilizers. Complex mineral fertilizers enrich the soil with essential elements. Compositions with a predominance of phosphorus and potassium are suitable for winter garlic. The dosage is about 20-30 grams per square meter.

Dolomite flour. Dolomite flour helps neutralize soil acidity, which has a beneficial effect on the development of garlic. A small amount of this substance in the hole helps the plant absorb nutrients better.

Biopreparations. Modern biopreparations contain useful microorganisms that improve the soil structure and increase plant resistance to diseases. Their use is becoming increasingly popular among gardeners.

Features of adding additives

Correct sequence. Adding additives to the hole is done in a certain order. First, organic substances are added, then mineral fertilizers and sand. The final stage is adding biopreparations.

Dosage and compatibility. It is important to follow the recommended dosages and consider the compatibility of various supplements.

Excessive fertilization can cause root burn and reduced yields.

Consideration of soil type. The composition of additives is adjusted depending on the type of soil on the site. On heavy clay soils, the amount of sand increases, and on sandy soils, the proportion of organic matter.

Preparing the hole

Depth and distance. Holes for winter garlic are made at a depth of 8-10 cm, with a distance of 15-20 cm between them.

Correct placement provides optimal conditions for plant development.

Pre-planting treatment. Before adding additives, it is recommended to treat the hole with a weak solution of potassium permanganate or a biofungicide for disinfection.

The final stage. After adding all the additives, the hole is lightly sprinkled with soil, forming a small depression for planting a clove of garlic.
