What the codling moth fears: not only pesticides

The codling moth, despite its telling name, destroys the harvest of not only apples, but also other fruits.

This is perhaps the most compelling reason not to sit idly by, but to enter into open confrontation with the pest, says Anastasia Kovrizhnykh, an expert of the online publication BelNovosti, an agronomist, and a landscape designer.

How to get rid of a pest

Not all summer residents are favorable to pesticides. If you are one of the supporters of "natural", that is, without the use of any chemicals, farming, the following tips will certainly be useful to you.

To get rid of caterpillars and butterflies in the garden, use different types of traps.

In spring, when insects are actively reproducing, use traps with pheromones.

The sticky surface of these traps secretes substances that attract males. Attracted by the scent, the males stick to the trap with their legs and wings.

During the flowering period, hang food traps with kvass, apple juice or spoiled compote on the trees. Butterflies will fly to the smell and will meet their death in the liquid.

To catch caterpillars, make trapping belts from corrugated cardboard.

Wrap the cardboard around the tree trunk so that the corrugated paper is vertical (up and down the trunk).

The caterpillars will crawl under the cardboard and create their cocoons there, which you will destroy in the fall along with the traps.

Finally, try to make your garden a haven for the codling moth's natural enemies. These include wasps, earwigs, ladybugs, bugs, ants, and birds.

One way to attract “helpers” in the fight against pests to your site is to plant flower beds with annual flowers.
