What else can you sow and plant in September: a note for summer residents

The list of plants that can be planted in autumn is quite short. However, in September you can still plant some vegetables and greens to get a new harvest very soon.

Of the garden crops, early ripening varieties of radish are excellent for sowing in September; the harvest can be obtained within 20-22 days after sowing.

The weather conditions and short days of September are more suitable for growing radishes than in June or July.

The duration of daylight during this period is about 10-12 hours. With such illumination, radishes cannot move to the peduncle formation phase and form a large root crop that grows continuously.

Premature bolting of radishes can also be caused by high temperatures with a lack of moisture. In September, the air temperature drops and there is more precipitation.

From the second half of September to the beginning of October is the best time to plant winter garlic. Only cloves from healthy bulbs are suitable for planting.

Cloves affected by diseases and pests are not suitable for planting. Large outer cloves yield a higher yield than small inner ones.

Winter sowing of carrots, radishes, beets, dill, lettuce and other crops is carried out in late autumn. But you can start preparing the beds as early as September. At this time, organic fertilizers are added during digging, as well as mineral fertilizers - phosphorus and potassium.

The areas freed up on the plot can be sown with green manure. They prevent the leaching of nutrients from the soil, inhibit the growth and reproduction of weeds, enrich the soil with nutrients and improve its structure.

Clover, beans, peas, as well as rye, wheat, barley, white mustard, rapeseed and other crops are usually sown as green manure.

From the end of August to the end of September, garden strawberries are planted. In one place, strawberries can give a good harvest for 5-6 years. After fruiting, garden strawberries develop vines or tendrils, on which rosettes are formed.

When in contact with the soil, the rosettes take root, forming independent plants. And the rooted plants serve as new planting material. The strongest and most developed seedlings usually come from rosettes that have taken root near the mother bush.
